Daughter of Abellatino Umberto at Kamatse "Micky" and Abellatino Godiva Calista at Treloarneo “Sky”.
When i began my obsession with this breed,I didn't realise how my heart would be broken time and time again. At the end of January 2007 I lost my lovely Zeta, then just 4 months later my beautiful giddy Tia, at the tender age of just 21 months.
She was perfectly healthy and had never had a days illness in her short life, she didnt even develop cherry eye. She was the perfect standard, lovely expression, but without excess dewlap that is so revered, and i loved her to bits.....
At the begining of May she was mated with a very beautiful young black dog. A week later she started being sick and was off her food, which i put down to the early signs of pregnancy. After a week i took her to the vet, who gave her a check over, she had been on antibiotics previous to being mated, she was showing no signs of pain, didn't have a temperature, was drinking, and was showing no signs of distress but i worried none the less, she just wasn't herself.
Over the next week the vomiting continued, she had started to loose weight and she spent most of her time in her bed. I tried everything to tempt her to eat but she wasn't interested. Because she wasnt eating, she wasnt passing anything, she was drinking but being sick straight after,it was only a matter of time before she started to become dehydrated. When she did because she couldnt keep anything down the immediate step was to admit her to veterinary surgery, she was put on a drip for 2 days and she seemed to perk up a little but not enough to stop us from worrying. My Vet suggested an operation to investigate properly, I helped and stayed with her until the anaesthetic kicked in, then went home to wait for news.
It wasnt good! At some time over the last two weeks probably when she had been out for a run in the field opposite our house, she had picked up and eaten what felt i can only describe as a very sharp, brittle, boney mass, it felt a little bit like the casing of a conker. It had perforated her gut and caused so much damage it would have been impossible to repair, there wasnt anything my vet could do but let her go to sleep....
She must have been in so much pain, my vet rigorously felt her tummy for obstructions but she didnt flinch, cry out or snap at anyone, as some dogs do if they are in pain...but as many people have told me before this breed has a high tolorance for pain. Maybe if she had shown signs of pain or discomfort the symptoms may have been easier to detect! I just can't believe she is gone, I will miss her so much...
