Treating Cuts and Wounds

Dont panic once you see blood, checks paws and claws first, look for foreign bodies, glass or splinters, only remove them if you can see they are not deep. Muzzle you dog if neccessary. Wash the wound out thoroughly with sterile or pre-boiled cooled water Use a sterile cotton dressing and apply pressure for a minute or two, to see if this stems the blood.

  • If the wound is clean, reasonably small and not bleeding profusely, apply an antibiotic or antiseptic cream and place an adhesive dressing on.
  • If the wound is large and bleeding a lot, it may need stitches and vet care, clean as above but do not apply cream.
  • If the wound has been caused by a dog bite your dog will need antibiotics, and therefore veterinary care.
  • Remember blood loss can be serious, it can be followed by shock or unconsciousness! Keep a close eye on your pet.
